Box office Mojo was launched in 1999. It was created by Brandon Gray and is only available in English. The website is used to track currently released and upcoming movies and it is able to rate the movies on the gross profits that they have produced in the cinema and when they have been released.
Two different types of charts can be formed with this information.
One chart will show what the current popular movies are that have been released in the cinemas. This will take all currently running movies and obtain the profit they make each day. It will then compare them to the other movies within the cinemas and it will give you a chart showing the public’s favorite and least favorite movies. This can be used to see what makes a good film, what production company has made the film and for the public what film they could watch.

It is very easy to use Box Office Mojo, and you can select what you would personally like to look through, this includes studios, people, genres, franchises, showdowns and theater counts, This allows you to find exactly what data you are looking for very easily and quickly. Once you select the category you want to look through it will take you to another page which will allow you to scan through the other category to find the one you are specifically looking for.

The other charts that can be made have data running from the creation of the site.
You are also able to select certain options of the time period you would like to look through; for example there is an option called "All time" which allows you to look through the profits of all the movies available on the website. Other options include daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. This can help people find what recent films are good to predict what the public want. |
I selected the "Indices" genres in order to have a look through the specific genres available to look at the date on the website. This is where I picked out the specific genres that i was going to compare to each other. This is the page that I looked through and I am only showing the different horror genres available on the website. It also names the film that is ranked number one in that sub-genre and it's lifetime gross.
To begin with I wanted to search through the data on " Horror- period" because it will allow me to have an overall look on all horror films not just a particular sub-genre, this will give me a rough idea on what some of the most successful and popular horror films are
This shows us that out of all of the films data available "The Conjuring" is ranked number one with a lifetime gross of $137,400,141 and the "Bram Stokers Dracula" was ranked number 10 with a lifetime gross of $82,522,790.
After having an overall look at the films i decided to focus on the sub-genre of "Slasher" films to find out which are the best movies that have made the greatest profit.I have selected "All Time" films because I want to see overall what makes the best slasher rather than what people like in recent times.
I have only decided to show the first top ten of the slasher films; because these ones will be easy to compare to each other and see the difference in the profits. As you can see Scream is ranked number one in the "Slasher" films; making some of the highest profits of $103,046,663.
I also decided to take a look at other sub-genres of horror in order to get a clear comparison of the movies most liked by audiences and ones that are able to produce the most amount of profit in the film industry
After "Slasher" I decided to look at the sub-genre "supernatural" as it is another well known and popular sub genre of horror.
After "Slasher" I decided to look at the sub-genre "supernatural" as it is another well known and popular sub genre of horror.
This is able to clearly show us that "The Sixth Sense" is ranked number one out of the supernatural films. It has a lifetime gross of $293,506,292 which is a lot higher than "Scream" in the sub- genre "Slasher" which is able to show us that supernatural horror films are more popular and more successful than the slasher films.
I finally decided to look at a less popular sub-genre of horror in order to have a look at the profits made. This would also allow me to compare the different sub-genres together to see the best profits and get an idea of what kind of horror films are more successful.
I looked at the sub-genre "Torture" as there is a lot of horror films that include some sort of torture or killing.
