We also decided it would be a good idea to research how many locations were in each trailer. We hoped that this would give us some guidance for how many locations we should film.
Wrong Turn 6 |
Scream 4 |
The trailer that we watched for Wrong Tern 6 was 90 seconds long and we found 5 different locations. The first location that we saw was a car scene of the main characters driving up to the mansion. The mansion was at the start and was the overall shot of the main building. Outside of the mansion there was a forest where you first see the family of killers. As well as this there are shots within a pool and derelict building. In both of these locations you see murders took place.

Scream 4 was the next trailer that we watched. In this trailer was found 8 different locations that were used in the 90 seconds trailer. In this film there were two houses that were used. Both of these houses were used when the killer is calling over. One was the houses was the main characters and the other was the house of her friends. There was also two streets used. One was a street that was lit up in the day time and the other street was filled with low key lighting at night time. There was also three other locations used to create a spooky atmosphere. These were a car park, barn with a party in and then a normal park in the day where the friend were.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter |
The Haunted
|
This trailer was 103 seconds long and had 8 different locations in. The main location was the highway where the main character was driving her motorbike down. There was also a underpass down the way way which she went through. Other than just seeing the main character you see a laboratory, train station, city, building, street and an aircraft carrier. All of these locations were used to show the zombie outbreak in different places over the world. This was effective as it shoed that the zombies had taken over and their was little form of Human life left.
|
As well as looking over trailer that were made professionally we look over a trailer that was made by a previous year group. The Hunted got full marks and I wanted to see their correlation to the amount of locations they filmed in. In their 112 second trailer they had 13 different locations. Among these locations they had a white room at the start where the killer is talking. They also had a library scene and a desk where he was stalking his victims. They also included streets, garden and car parks where the killer would chase the victims. Finally they had three different killer/torture dens where the victims would be killed and then they would be placed in different locations as well. Overall this did not fit the pattern and had many more locations then professional trailers.

The Other Side of the Door |
The Boy |
The trailer for 'The Other Side of the Door' was 152 seconds long and we spotted 8 different locations. These were a city, a beach, the inside of a home. There were also scenes showing an accident twice. During the trailer we also see a temple, a forest and a harbour. All of these locations were used to tell the story of a grieving mother trying to make contact with her dead child one last time, this backfires and she unleashes an evil spirit. This was effective because seeing the main character in different locations made the trailer easier to engage with and also made it easier for the audience to identify with how desperate the mother was in the story.

'The Boy' trailer had scenes in 5 different locations and was 153 seconds long. The locations shown in the trailer were the inside of a house, the outside of the house, in a car, in a garden and also in a graveyard. The trailer tells the story of a babysitter who has to live in a scary mansion to care for a doll, who acts as a substitute for a dead child. This trailer had less locations compared to most of the others we saw but showing most of the action going on inside the house worked to the trailer's advantage and made it more of an intense watch. The audience get more drawn in to the story as the events unfold.

The Girl with all the Gifts |
The Wolfman |
|
|
This trailer was 132 seconds and showed scenes in 8 locations. These were an army base, a field, a forest, an abandoned building, out in a city, in an army vehicle, in a hospital and on a rooftop. The variety of locations helped to engage the audience and made viewers curious about what would happen to the children in the film. Because of this, it shows the trailer was successful because it made the audience want to watch the film .
|
This trailer showed a forest, a cemetery, the inside of a house, a forge, a mansion, and a church. There were scenes in a village, in the catacombs, in a tent, a lab, in a courtroom, at a mask ball, and in a town. This is a total of 13 locations and the trailer was 155 seconds in length. The use of such a variety of locations could, in some cases, arguably make the trailer more confusing and mislead the audience about what the film would be about because there is such a broad variety. However, if the shots are put together carefully with the right sounds and transitions it can work , We felt that 'Wolfman' successfully included so many locations because by the end, it is still clear what the film would be about.

Our conclusion...
We have decided overall that the use of a variety of locations in our trailer is mostly good as long as they are well thought out and can be understood as a part of a developing plot. For example, as a group we found 'The other Side of the Door' confusing because the locations are so varied, you assume it's set in an asian country because of the temple, but the casting choices for the mother show her as a an everyday, working class, white mother. It switches from a home to an accident to a temple to a harbour to a forest. We found it overwhelming to watch and hard to follow because of the variety of vastly different locations shown. It was difficult to understand the storyline and get a feel for what the base storyline of the film is. Because of this, we will use lots of locations for our trailer as they do add suspense and make the trailer more interesting for a viewer, however, we will be mindful of ensuring that all the locations we use are related and dont change too drastically across our trailer.
