Iconic images
Exorcists:
This is an iconic image from the movie "Exorcist" because in this image we see the main location of the movie and the "Villain." This means that this shot technically sums up the movie into one frame. The fact that this shot shows the possessed girl with her head turned backwards 180 degrees follows the grotesque nature of the movie, things that weren't ever seen at this time when the movie was released. |
Halloween
This is the most iconic piece of imagery for the movie 'Halloween' because it shows the commonly used murder weapon in this movie which is the knife. However it isn't just an image of the knife we also see that the backdrop of the knife is a pumpkin; this is very clever because the knife and the killers hand wielding the knife appear to be part of the pumpkin. The use of the pumpkin is also clever because they are carved on halloween as decorations so this is can be linked very easily to the title of the movie. |
Scream
This has become one the most iconic pieces of imagery in the horror genre, it has grown in popularity through all forms of media to become essentially the face of the horror genre. Despite being one of the more simple images it is one of the most recognised worldwide. The mask alone is now what the movie is remembered for and if you were to ask anyone what they know about the movie scream they would most likely tell you something about the mask. The reason the killer in this movie became so iconic about the time of its release is because at this time all of the killers were never just a person they all had some kind of monstrous features about them which essentially would scare more people you would think. However as this killer is just a person behind the mask it adds a level of realism to the film which therefore created lots of fear amongst the first viewers of the movie. |
Our Iconic Images Ideas:
Angel
To begin with we looked at trying to make the angel statue an iconic image; this is because the angel symbolises the religious aspect of our trailer. The angel also symbolises heaven and good will, the graveyard surrounding it juxtaposes the greatness it represents. We wanted to include the image of the angel on our magazine cover, however we decided against it because we thought just using the angel would be too simple and we wanted to include the whole graveyard as a representation of the religious element. |
Graves
We also looked at incorporating graves into an iconic image; this is mainly because our trailer is called the "Grave Filler" so it is silly not to try and include graves into our iconic image. Another reason we thought the use of graves would be fitting is because graves represent death; also we wanted many graves to be incorporated into the shot as it may suggest to the audience a mass killing and that this 'Grave Filler' has killed lots of people. |
Mask
The mask was another shot we wanted to look at for our iconic image; this is because the mask clearly shows that the identity of the killer or killers will not be identified throughout the trailer or the movie in fact. Also by using the mask it won't give too much information away about the plot of the movie; this will allow people can interpret things in their own way which could essentially lead to them watching the trailer to see if they can find out anymore information. |
Brand Identity
Brand Identity is how a business wants to come across towards its consumers. The components of a brand include the logo, title and tagline. These are each created by the company in order to be remembered.
Taglines
"Its Not The House That's Haunted"
- This is a good example of a tagline because it doesn't give away too much of the plot of the movie. By saying that "Its not the house thats haunted" it tells the viewers that the plot has nothing to do with a haunted house; in fact its telling the audience that its someone living in the house. Another reason why this is a good tagline is because it is memorable; this is mainly because it only really links in with this particular film. However on this particular poster they have not made the tagline the main focus; it is shown in a darker text under the title which demonstrates that it is not what the makers want you to pay most attention to. |
"Do You Believe In Ghosts"
- The plot of "The Woman in Black" is all about a ghost of a woman that is living in an old house. This is why this particular tagline is good; it is a rhetorical question. This means that they are in particular asking the viewers and audience if they believe in ghosts; it is not an overly complicated tagline and definitely does not give away too much of the plot. All the tagline on this poster does is tell the audience that the film may involve ghosts; this is one of the reasons why it is most effective. Using this particular tagline also allows the audience to get more involved with the action that can go on in the film; this is because the question seems to be coming from one of the characters involved in the film. |
"What Happens When You Sleep"
- Paranormal Activity is a good example of a film with a good tagline; the main reason for this is it will make people remember the film when they sleep or are getting ready for bed. It links the film with the normality of real life which can intentionally make the film more scary and life like. By doing this it can allow the audience to remember the film a lot more at different times of the day after seeing the poster or the film; this means it can be spoken about which can equal in higher amount of success. Adding to this the tagline tells the audience that the main setting of the film will be at night time just as people are going to sleep; it also tells you that the film is mainly going to be about what goes on when the lights go out and you begin to sleep. |
Our Tagline Ideas:
This was the first draft of our tagline, we wanted it to sound powerful and to stand out and appeal to our audience. We feel that this title is powerful, however it does not fit with the theme of our particular trailer as we needed a tagline that would sound like it was made for a horror.
|
This was the second draft of our tagline, we wanted there to be a link to God within the tagline because we have a religious element that runs throughout our trailer. In the end we thought this tagline wouldn't fit with our trailer because it didn't sound as professional as the previous idea.
|
We decided to use this tagline for our trailer because we feel it goes with the overall theme of the trailer really well, it explains the link between the religious aspect and the murders as well as explaining why the murders are happening in the first place. We decided on this tagline opposed to the others because we thought the others sounded as though they would suit action films rather than horror films.
