Before filming our swede, we decided it would be a good idea to research classic horror shots that we always expect to see in a horror film or TV programme.
These are:
360 degree shots
Off kilter shots
Over the shoulder shots of the killer
Close-up/extreme close-up shots on fearful expressions
Close-up shots on a weapon
High angle shots on victim/s
Low angle shots on killer
Stabbing scenes without hurting the actors
Point of view swap shots between the killer and victim/s
We filmed some of these ourself and provided screenshots and others are accurate clips we found on youtube that provide good examples of how these shots look!

360 degree shots are often used to suggest that a character is dizzy or feeling ill. It can be used to show a character falling to the floor after being stabbed. It highlights their suffering and pain. it is a useful shot for showing the character's expression and also symbolises panic because of the way the camera moves.

This shot is filmed over the shoulder of the victim, looking at the killer, so we can see her point of view in the scene. Over the shoulder shots allow the audience to put themselves in the shoes of the victim and to feel their fear. We decided that over the shoulder shots should definitely be used in our trailer as they add suspense.
|
Close ups or extreme close ups of the victim's frightened expression are very effective because they emphasise the victim's feelings about their situation and force the audience to identify with the way the victim is feeling. We feel that close up shots would be useful for our trailer because they engage the audience more by drawing their attention to the character's emotions.
|
Low angle shots on killer are interesting because they easily lead the audience to feel direct fear towards this character. It makes the scene more intense because the audience gets the impression that the killer is dangerous and unstoppable. Using a low angle when the killer is the subject on screen will make our trailer more engaging because it makes the audience attach fear to the killer and empathise with the victim.

Stabbing without hurting is important for simple health and safety reasons: if you are using a realistic prop that could potentially cause harm, the actors need to practice handling it safely before the cameras are turned on. Learning to stab without hurting is useful because it means that you can show more dramatic and gory scenes in your trailer or film.

Point of view shots between the killer and victim are engaging because they help the audience to absorb the looks between the pair and add tension to the scene.
