What type of sounds did we want to use in our trailer?
Screaming
We decided that we wanted to include a couple of screams in our movie trailer because it is found in most conventional horrors; which allows our trailer to follow on from that. It shows the emotions that the character is feeling; through both facial expressions and sound. As the sound would be loud against the background it may shock the audience and bring them into the emotion the character is feeling as well. It is good to use an unpredictable sound, like a scream, in order to provoke certain emotions and it is better for us to use a scream at irregular times and a lot more random. This is because it will make them more harsh and surprising to the audience than if they were of a regular pattern and occurred often throughout the trailer. |
Children playing and laughing
We thought that by including children playing and laughing in the background of certain clips would help counteract the ongoing horror that is occurring throughout our trailer. Laughter and happiness is very oftenly used as a way to present fear. This is because you normally associate children as being happy and playful but by including this in a horror the idea is reversed; it will trigger some sort of warning in the audience's brain and allows the trailer to build up tension about what's going to happen next. There could be so many possibilities. |
Church Bells
We wanted to include the sounds of church bells throughout our trailer; particularly when clips of the church, both inside and outside, appeared. This would allow us to create more of a spooky atmosphere. Church bells can also be unsettling for the viewer because of how monotone and repetitive they are; they are also very loud which can be taken advantage of by killers as the victim can't hear much else whilst the bells are ringing. |
Choir
Originally we thought it would be important to have a choir in parts of our trailer because the whole storyline was based in a graveyard and church. Having a choir in the background would have been able to add more suspense and somewhat calmness to some of our clips. We thought we would use this sound as a juxtaposition to the horror in the clips that are being shown. However we then decided that after putting all of our clips together it no longer fitted in. |
Heavy Breathing
Using heavy breathing in a horror trailer will add more panic to the scenes; it will hopefully show the audience that something bad could be beginning to occur or that another murder has began to take place. Heavy breathing is also very suspenseful when used correctly; a common place in a horror trailer for this to be located is just on a black screen.

Dialogue
Originally we wanted to include dialogue because it is used in most controversial horror trailers because it will help explain what is going on and gives a hint to the audience of what the character may go through in the film.
First we planned a speech that took inspiration from Hitlers many speeches; we changed large amounts of words so that it would link with working with the devil and murdering the devil. However after filming the speech and putting it throughout our trailer we decided that it no longer fitted with our specific storyline.
This is when we decided to cut the speech out of our trailer and made a variety of notes on where some dialogue may fit in; for example lines that could come from the characters. However we eventually decided that by using dialogue in our movie trailer would over complicate it and found that it may distract the audience from the main story line. This is why we decided to not include dialogue in our movie trailer and just keep it to background sounds and sound effects; keeping it to a minimum.
