What is Google Trends?
Google Trends is a public web facility of Google Inc, based on Google Search, that shows how often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages. The horizontal axis of the main graph represents time (starting from 2004), and the vertical is how often a term is searched for relative to the total number of searches globally. On August 5, 2008, Google launched Google Insights for Search, a more sophisticated and and advanced service displaying search trends data. On September 27, 2012, Google merged Google Insights for Search into Google Trends.
How can we use Google Trends to create our trailer?
Google Trends can help us because it shows what is popular and what is given attention online. It also helps us to identify where our biggest target audience is in global terms.
Some results...
From searching the genre 'Horror', I can infer that horror films/ TV programmes are rapidly growing in popularity since 2009 and the regional interest is significant across a variety of different countries. This is reassuring for us making a horror trailer because it shows that it has a greater chance of being popular and successful overall.

From searching the sub genre 'Slasher', I can infer that interest in slasher films greatly increased from 2015 onwards. This shows that if we chose a slasher sub genre for our trailer it would probably be well received. The regional interest shows that Russia searches 'slasher' as a sub genre the most. This means that if we had lots of funding, we could have the railer translated into different languages like Russian, meaning that we could make a profit globally.

I searched the term 'supernatural' to see how popular it would be on Google over a decade. It appears that supernatural seems to remain on a balanced interest over time which shows that doing a good supernatural trailer could result in a sudden heightened interest in supernatural. However, we could also run the risk of not getting much of a reaction too because supernatural doesn't seem to be massively interesting to anyone, the interest has stayed at the same level.

I also searched the term 'thriller' to see how popular it would be on Google. Google Trends showed that thriller gained massive popularity after 2009 but then dipped lower and have been on a very slight increase in popularity overall ever since.
The search also shows that thriller films are most popular in the eastern world and therefore could suggest that we should make a thriller that appeals to eastern cultures. This could affect the mis-en-scene used. |
I also thought it would be a good idea to research our swede title to see how popular it is on Google. I thought this would be an interesting and useful thing to research as our final trailer could be inspired by lots of the ideas and work we have tried out and done on our swede. From this result we can also see that the film was only popular in America and the UK. This shows what our main target audience would be if we made something similar to 'In Fear'.
